On January 24th, 2020, an earthquake with the magnitude of 6.8 struck the country of Turkey. The strike centered in Sivrice of the Elazig province which was felt as far as the nearby countries of Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. Many buildings collapsed during the earthquake, causing many people to get stuck in the rubble and ultimately resulted in a number of injuries as well as death. While the search and rescue operations have ended, they were able to rescue 45 people from collapsed buildings, according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management President (AFAD). With all the buildings and homes that were destroyed, there is an estimated 10,000 people who were left homeless. With over 40 deaths, over 1600 people injured, and with shock waves felt throughout multiple countries, this event is an international disaster that the world is still recovering from.
