Shannon Jolliff-Dettore is the Director in the Office of LGBTQ Services and Gender Equity Programs at Central Michigan University. One of her areas of work is CMU’s Women’s History Month, where they put on events throughout the month of March that highlights women and underrepresented genders. While the department hosts the events, Jolliff-Dettore says that the events happen in collaboration with students and groups on campus.

The events that were held looked very different from one another in order to cover a wide variety of topics and spaces for women and underrepresented genders on campus. They ranged from spring break self-care packages to panels that hosted important conversations about topics some may find difficult or uncomfortable, or that they would just like to know more about.

The events that were held include a self-care package giveaway, an intersectionality lunch panel, Women/BIPOC in STEM, yoga for every body, Women’s History Month Meditation Hosted by UREC, the light within us hosted by the Institute for Transformative Dialogue, Salary Negotiations for Underrepresented communities with career services, and a wellness workshop.

“We tend to highlight conversations that folks might be sitting in isolation around,” says Jolliff-Dettore, “…and then I also think it’s important to have spaces for women and underrepresented genders… to highlight that opportunity as well.”

Women’s History Month is celebrated every March at CMU.

My experience:

I had a lot of fun working on this assignment. Even with all of the technical difficulties, I learned a lot not only about Women’s History Month at CMU, but also about how to make a quality news video out of what you have, with as much as you can. Given I caught this news event when they only had two events for Women’s History Month left, there was not a lot of coverage I could get. I definitely wish I was aware of the month’s events a few weeks prior, as it seemed like they had some events that might have been more interesting for news coverage (for example: yoga and gift bags). I still went to both of the last two different events, which were primarily speaking events. I got as many detail shots, medium shots, and wide shots as I could, and I think it turned out well, but there was a major learning curve in this for sure. I’m looking forward to continuing my growth as a student in this class.

I spent a lot more time on adding effects and using effect controls to make my video as sound and look as appealing to the eye as possible, especially a lot more than I did on the last video, as I have noticed that I have already learned a lot about just the technical side of Adobe Premiere Pro since the first. I also was constrained on time due to circumstances out of my control, but feel as though I made it work the best I could. I’m excited to see how much more I improve even until the next video!

Side note- why did the warp stabilizer make my background in some of the videos wobble??
