My experience:
This photoshoot was very quick because while Alayna models, she also is a photographer, so we were able to troubleshoot different ideas or problems very quickly. I reached out to Alayna through VERGE as well, since I saw she does amazing as a model for them, too. She also won creator of the month at the same time as X, the guy from my last photoshoot.
It was very difficult to find a location for this shoot. I wanted to do the French Auditorium in the EHS building on campus, but when I got there, there was some big event happening and we couldn’t use it. Since this was the only time that worked for both of us, I decided to try and troubleshoot before Alayna got there and find a place in EHS that would look interesting for this shoot.
Originally, the vibe I was going for was the college vibe going to class, but obviously with fashionable clothing. Basically, how to be fashionable in class. I thought the auditorium would have been a phenomenal place to shoot due to its size, how it’s modern, and has a lot of visually appealing elements.
(thought: Maybe I could try again for a location lighting shoot…)
I found this room on the fourth floor that had a lot of natural light from a lot of windows, and had an interesting setup with the large, rectangular desk. I figured if I could somehow take photos from higher up, so that there was a down-facing angle, that I could make it work and try to use the table to guide the viewer’s eye.
Also, these photos look blurry on wordpress, but the actual images I’m uploading are crystal clear, so there’s a problem with how they’re being uploaded, not with the actual photos.
This shoot went well, but I wasn’t the happiest with the location. That’s part of the job though… to make due with what you have. I found a decent open location to shoot at and made the most out of it. I think some of the shadows ended up looking really cool.
Since the background was mostly black, it was difficult with the lighting. I wanted to light the subject’s outfit up more, but that proved to be difficult because it would light up the whole room. Even a snoot was not working too well. I got the subject to safely stand on a chair in the middle of the desks in hopes to raise above the table to see the full outfit, and those turned out better to me. I also rearranged some of the background to make it look as good as possible.
Basically, this assignment taught me how to make do with what you have and to control the controllables. While they aren’t my favorite photos, I think they turned out good for what we had. And Alayna was an absolute perfect model for this assignment!
