My experience:

For the last assignment for this class final, I covered location lighting. Continuing my trend of the last few assignments, where I would search Instagram to find student models or students who like being part of VERGE magazine, I was able to find Melony.

Melony was eager to help with this assignment, and we got the whole thing set up within a few minutes. Frustrated with not being able to use the French Auditorium in my fashion shoot, I wanted to see if it would be available for my location shoot. Luckily, it was.

The French Auditorium was an amazing place for a location lighting assignment. I knew that it was extremely visually appealing, but also the way it was designed naturally guides the way our eyes move. I just knew it could be great.

Of course I wanted to continue to experiment with the gel colors. I didn’t realize that different equipment I checked out from the department would have different get colors. These ones were so much more vibrant and exciting. Then, when I figured that Melony was wearing light colored clothes, I thought about what gel would pop best in that location. When she told me her favorite color was pink, I wanted to try and incorporate that in some way. But I also used purple a lot.

The first two photos in the gallery though had no use of gel colors. I was able to find that corner of the room and it had a bright neon-red exit sign. I wanted to see what I could make out of that. Her face was a little dark, so then I pointed a godox at the ceiling far away to add that tint of light on her face (like you see in the first photo).

I also knew I needed overalls taken from the middle of the room. That was the reason I wanted to shoot in there in the first place.

I experimented with three different light sources for almost the entire shoot. I had one pointed at her back to make her stand out against the background, especially when it was dark. I then had two more strobes that sometimes I used one with purple gel and one with pink gel, or sometimes I would use one gel color and the other would be used normally.

I’m very happy with how these turned out. Melony was a great subject and I think the French Auditorium was the perfect place for this concept. I really wanted to go with cool, casual clothes too, as to fit the theme while not taking too much attention from the location and lighting techniques.
